ABOUT JUNE RYAN
June enlisted in the United States Coast Guard and is the first former enlisted woman to rise to the rank of Rear Admiral. While in the Coast Guard June held a number leadership positions. They included Commanding Officer (“Captain”) of two Coast Guard Cutters (ships), Chief of Staff for U.S. Coast Guard Pacific Area, and Commander (CEO equivalent) and Deputy of three regional units. A Rear Admiral in the Coast Guard (or Navy) holds the identical rank, pay-grade, and military honors as Major General in the Army, Air Force and Marine Corps. All Rear Admirals and Major Generals wear two stars on their uniforms. The highest rank in today’s military is a four-star Admiral or General.
While its always appropriate to address a retired military member by their rank, June is comfortable with addressing her either as “June” or ”Admiral Ryan.” When approached by nervous individuals who think that “they might get it wrong”, June often reminds them, “Look, I spent over 35+ years in the U. S. Coast Guard, aboard ships and ashore units – Its OK, I’m certain I’ve been called a lot worse.” ☺
When introducing her to the stage, either “June Ryan” or “Admiral June Ryan” is used. (The “Rear,” in the title “Rear Admiral” is traditionally dropped when making a verbal introduction.)

Yes, her presentations are created in PowerPoint, and she is accustomed to advancing her own slides.
For smaller venues (rooms holding 150 persons or less), a lavalier microphone is preferred but not required. The room should also be equipped with the ability to project slides, and advance the slides from the front of the room. Special care should be given to ensure individuals seated in the back of the room can easily view the projection screen or TV unobstructed from persons seated in front of them..
TABLES: Where sufficient space allows, tables should be arranged in a herringbone pattern with participants only seated facing the front of the room. Each participant should have a seat at a table, affording them a place to follow lessons and write notes in a workbook.
ACTIVITY SPACE: Workshops are also very interactive and often include group activities. Ample space between tables and freedom of movement from the front of the room to the back, and from side to side is preferred. Workshops arranged in “U” shaped patterns restrict movement and should be avoided.
